    Password Managers

We all have tons of passwords to deal with and if we are wise we don't use one password for all of our favorite sites. Your banking password should not be used on your favorite porn site. Just a bad idea.

There is help available now both Internet Explorer and Firefox have password managers available. I would recommend the built in Password Manager in Firefox as my first choice. You can read about it here and see all of the features: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/...20Manager&as=q

For those of you who prefer Internet Explorer there are several plug-ins available. I have not tried any of them. You can find them here: http://www.ieaddons.com/en/search/?search=Password

I personally use a commercial program called RoboForm. It is not free but I have a huge number of usernames and password for myself and my clients and I can carry them all on my Thumb Drive wherever I go and feel confident that if I loose the Thumb Drive no one will be able to access them. You can find information at http://www.roboform.com/

    Re: Password Managers

    John,

Is there a way to keep the Board from deleting my cookies? When I log off, I get the following message:
    -----------------------------------------------
    vBulletin Message All cookies cleared!-----------------------------------------------

I have my Firefox Browser setting to not delete cookies and I have the user name and password saved in my Firefox password manager. But, I have to enter my entire user name and member number each time I log on. Then, the password box automatically fills from Firefox.

The log on page used to allow me to just type the first letter of the user name as you mentioned elsewhere in this thread. But, it no longer has that feature for me.

Sorry, if this turns out to be a stupid question.

    Thanks,
    Dave B.

        Re: Password Managers

I don't have an answer except that it must be quirk with Firefox. Even though I use Firefox most all of the time I also use RoboForm to handle my passwords so I can't duplicate the problem that you are having. I did ask Gary Chesnut who also uses Firefox and he reports that same issue that you are reporting.

As far as the system saying when you log out that it is clearing all cookies I believe it is only writing to the cookie that you logged out at a certain time and not clearing it completely.

If you run this script it will read your NCRS Technical Discussion Board cookie for you. https://www.forums.ncrs.org/register/getCookie.php If the cookie were cleared as deleted there would be nothing to read.

          Re: Password Managers

          John,

Thanks for checking on my question and reply. In case it helps, here is what comes up when I open the link you sent (un-redacted).
          ---------------------------------------------------
          Display Cookie Script VBulletin:
          ncrslastvisit : 1270435568 (04-04-2010 22:46:08)
          ncrslastactivity: 0 (12-31-1969 19:00:00)
          ncrsuserid : 0
          ncrspassword :

          Customisation:
          vb_userid: 225 (David Banwarth)
          VBvisitdate: 1270472572 (04-05-2010 09:02:52)
          -----------------------------------------------------
Interestingly, if I log on after activating that link, my user name and password is automatically entered (as though the password manager works). But, after logging off again, it does not automatically re-enter them again.

If its a quirk with Firefox, it's not a big problem. Thanks for trying to help those of us affected though.

            David and Rick,

Try leaving the TDB without logging off. Won't hurt anything and see if that makes any difference when you come back.

              John,

The Board automatically welcomes me back in when I do that. No logon is asked for.

That is exactly what logging off is suppose to do, clear your cookie... So don't log-off... Just close your window...

                regards,
