    Krylon 1613 discontinued

I've been having increasing difficulty locating Krylon 1613 semi-flat black paint (an often used blackout paint) and discovered that it is no longer listed on the Krylon website. I e-mailed Krylon this morning and received the following response:

"Thank you for your inquiry. The 1613 has been discontinued, reformulated and renumbered with 51613. The 1613 is no longer being manufactured or distributed."

I tried the 51613 and it's too glossy for my taste. It could have something to do with the new fan spray nozzle which applies the paint very liberally and broadly. Soooo, if you've used 1613 in the past and think that some touchup work might be in your future, you may want to check your favorite supplier for the last of their current stock of 1613. Krylon's Rust Tough Enamel (RTA 9203) may be a suitable alternative, but I haven't tested it yet (and probably won't need to as I depleted the 1613 stock of several local Sherwin Williams' stores this morning )

    Cheers!

I tried the Rust Tough Enamel recently and was not real pleased with the results.
It didn't spray or flow like the old #1613 did. Even spraying it lightly, it looks thicker when it dries than the old stuff did and the sheen is different. I'm looking for other alternatives.

Last week I bought a couple of cans of Krylon 41613 Semi-Flat Black at our Wal-Mart in Canada. It has a low sheen. I didn't know there were so many variations of semi-flat black from one company.

I am curious if anyone has tried Krylon's BBQ Black 1618. I have used this and it appears to be very close; however, I have not done a side by side compare. The one added advantage is the additional heat protection.

I did and it worked great on the grill. At the time (and still do) have some Krylon 1613 on the shelf so just made a mental note.

I was looking for the 1613 this past week and noted the numbers had changed. No urgency so didn't explore the change like Jeff.

Jeff, Krylon company is so hard to figure out. I mean they have all those weird colors on display at Walmarts. Yet they discontinue a much used and sought after semi flat black. Course maybe when the bean counters see the sales reports the color is a loser. Who knows. Thank God I bought a decent supply.

Another color that is hard to get is the Dull Aluminum. It may be discontinued.
If all else fails go to your local Car Quest store and have them mix it up for you in PPG enamel. 24 ozs of gloss black to 7 ozs of flattener.(confirm this) End result is a very pleasing semi flat black that is even better than the Krylon. Have them put it in spray cans for you. Not a cheap project but you will have that.

Does Krylon make the dull aluminum?

SEMS has several shades of black. That is all I use. The best "rattle can" paint that I have ever used

I agree, the SEM Trim Black #39143 is just right, not too shiny, not too dull. The quality of the paint is the best I've used.

It can usually be found @ local auto body supply stores.

                            Tom,
One of the posters on another forum indicated that dull aluminum (#1403) has been discontinued as well, although I haven't confirmed that with Krylon.

As Dickie Whittingtom mentioned the SEM brand of black, they also make a self etching primer #39673 in rattle cans that is also Black. It works great under parts that will be finished in black. It's also available in quarts with #39674. There #39143 Trim Black in rattle cans is also a nice semi gloss top coat.
