Re: Judging Guides and Color Pictures

I would implore those posting to please restrict comments to whether or not you are interested in moving the Judging Guides to a color photo format in printed form. As has been mentioned there are many other ways we could electronically use judging guides, but please make that a separate thread and discussion.

There have already been C4 Judging Guides in color, so there is precedent. In today's world printing in color is nominally different in price than black and white, and if printed rather than copied the quality is far superior. Currently many Chapters as well as the National print their newsletters in color format, and everyone has welcomed the change.

As one who has spent countless hours first on the 68-69 JG and now currently the 70-72 JG I can tell you that significant effort has been put into upgrading the photos to show clarity, correctness and color. Those of us on the committee bemoan the thought of all of our man (and woman) hours being wasted if the new JG goes into print as a copied B&W manual. While the purchasers will still benefit from all of the changes, I can tell you that the difference in photo clarity will change to being like seeing them through black-and-white cataracts compared to what those of us on the revision team currently view in our version.

In 2016 the technology exists for me to be able to print a professional quality color JG right here at home, bind it and ship it. Services also exist for Judging Guides to be remotely printed and drop shipped to purchasers at any time they wish. Both of these types of arrangements could be utilized by our home office to avoid the storage of manuals while keeping the quality at a level that the membership deserves.

None of us watches black-and-white TV any more, none of us even make photocopies when we can print a first copy from a file on our computer. I would suggest that opportunity exist to move our Judging Guides to the best possible format while keeping costs in line with what they've been for years.

I agree with most of what you are saying. Clarity and correctness it the key issue how it is delivered to the membership is the real question being debated. Whether it is an upgrade to color of the current printed version of the JG or a new electronic JG that can be download at time of purchase is a decisions that NCRS needs to decide. I would be OK with either one.

I believe that all of the JGs should be printed in color. I am very sure color film was available when the first 1953 Vette came off the assembly line.

We all have at least one and others more than one Corvette valued at at least $50k, if not way more if its a C1 or C2....and owners/members want to go cheap over another $25 for a color JG? It boggles my mind.

            Ken,

I would suggest that the majority of our membership - including me, who is on the computer all day long - will prefer a paper copy to start. The 300 or so of us here on the DB are a small minority. Let's start with Step 1, and then move on from there.

Re: Judging Guides and Color Pictures

In reply to Mark's original question as to how members feel about color photos in the judging guide, I agree with Patrick's comments. NOT having color photos in the next edition of the 70-72 JG would be (will be?) a huge disappointment. It would be well worth additional costs, in my opinion. And maybe all of us with 70-72 cars could give Patrick, Alan S. and a few others a little break from having to post pics of their cars all the time (but probably not!)

Good suggestion here, Patrick. We should urge that quotes be obtained on various printing and delivery methods.

                      Mark,

I agree the time has come to use color photos in future published judging guides. I too have struggled at times with the details in the black and white photos. Though, as I have learned from some of the posts that may be due to the choice of printing the manuals. Either way, I vote for color photos and would be willing to pay for the increased cost.

And to keep some of you guys at bay I will add that I am only offering to pay the increased costs for my manuals, not everybody's.

                      Good topic Mark.

                      Eric

I'm all for color pics and I'm willing to pay the cost. I would suggest that you have the option to buy either a B/W copy or a color copy at a somewhat higher price. I think that would satisfy everyone.

                          Depends how HQ stores them.
If they have to keep 200 copies of each on hand because the minimum order is 200 each, it's not going to happen.
I would subscribe to the KISS principle and stay with one version. I suspect that Eric M would lobby the same.
