General Curtis LeMay, the man who firebombed Japan with B-29s and later formed the Strategic Air Command, with one of his Corvettes. He allowed organized road racing events on many USAF air bases in the fifties but then the enlisted men complained (as did their wives) because they had to "volunteer" to staff the weekend racing events and that put an end to the runway road races. (One of the few times that bitching and moaning, a military right and tradition, actually put an end to something.) Lemay was a bona fide car nut.

The JalopyJournal.com is an excellent website for car nuts.
Thier "HAMB" is a neat forum and stuff for sale site.

        Rob -

My uncle Wes (3-star General) was the Inspector General, and later, Deputy Commanding General of SAC under LeMay, and they were next-door neighbors in the same retired-General community after both of them retired from active duty. I met LeMay several times while visiting Wes on trips to the west coast, and all the "stories" you've read about him are true; never saw him without a (Cuban) cigar.

I think the car is a '59......looking at the seat pattern. But unsure about the hood support on the passenger side. Did early '59's have that? It's radio equipped, note distributor shield upside down on the front air cleaner.

.....but, I think it may be a '57 engine. Notice the 9 fin valve covers. What's really weird is those hoses. The ones between the two carburetors and where they're Tee'd together. On the drivers' side, you can see the end of the hose near the hood latch. What are those hoses for??????

The guy appears to be checking timing. Notice the wires connected to the coil, and the ground connected to the choke air pipe. What's really strange is his attire. He wearing a dress shirt and tie to do this engine work, but he has those cool work coveralls on to stay clean.

p.s. Rob- I spent a few hours on that website looking at the photos! Great pics. Thanks for passing it along.

And some more (noticed the 2 cars in Sebring on the second picture, with the one in the back having the finned big brake option):

Who said Roy B. had the only Corvette with wire wheels. This pic is of the swedish Prince Bertil geting a customised '58 Corvette as a gift from GM; it later got a customised front and was drag raced a lot called the Snoopy i think its now restored and still in Sweden...
