    Shim Stock for hub runout

    Hi Folks.

I've reviewed a couple very helpful threads about use of shim stock for fixing runout on front hubs rather than using a tapered shim plate.

I'm a bit confused. Shim stock is generally not tapered and I've never met a beer can with a tapered thickness. Is the method to stack cut out and drilled out shim stock at the high end and gradually fewer stacked around the hub to compensate ?? What I don't get is that you are still not tapered. Are we expecting (from experience) that as we torque down the custom cut stock will compress to a taper ??

Let me know if that's how it's supposed to work. Even better, if someone knows where to get appropriate tapered shim stock in the Toronto area let me know.

    Thanks for the guidance.

When using shim stock to correct runout no taper is involved. You simply add the thickness of shims required at each lug bolt position.

A tapered shim is actually a better method because it fully "supports" the rotor and completely "fills" the interface between the rotor and the hub. However, there is a downside inasmuch as the tapered shim has significant thickness and spaces the rotor outboard by some amount.

      Hi Joe

Sorry for the delayed "thanks". You've confirmed what I thought but sometimes it helps to hear the obvious from experience (your of course).

I've ordered the 006 brake align tapered shims. No one around has an appropriate lathe but Nucap, the manufacturer of brake align is minutes from my home. Very helpful with technical detail and ordered through NAPA. It will take a couple weeks to get but in the mean time I've micro'ed a beer can and pop can (0045 and 0035) to make temporary shims. The runout was sufficient that with the little bit we drive there is now more air in the front brakes lines than brake fluid. Took me 4 hours to bleed out the fronts with a pressure bleeder after trying both foot and vacuum methods in vein.

      Cheers.
