Correct battery cable markings for a '66

I'm getting conflicting information regarding markings on the positive and negative battery cables for a non A/C '66. The AIM shows a 6286180 for the positive cable, and 2981079 for the negative cable, however the JG indicates 6286188 for the positive which is very likely not correct. But the real question is should both cables be marked with the part number? One of the suppliers indicates that the negative cable should be stamped with the part number, but the positive cable should not have the part number stamped.
It seems to me that both cables should have their part numbers stamped in white letters - is this a correct assumption?

    Thanks,

    Bob

    Robert,
I've seen markings on the negative cable before, but don't recall the number. In NY state it is difficult to get cars that were not driven year around. So I can't comment on the positive cable with any reliability. For some reason the positive cable is replaced more often than the negative.

"66" w/o A/C - What are the correct markings? Is the JG wrong?
I have had two different suppliers tell me they are referring to the "original blue print" when marking the negative cable 6286180 and not marking the positive cable.
How does this get resolved and/or corrected?

      Thank You
      Tony

        Bob,

I just went out into the garage and checked the cables that came off my car (I can't swear that they are original, but I believe them to be. The Black (positive) is marked with 6286180, but the dark brown negative has no part number on it. The only marking on it is the letter "N" near the "spring" clamp end in the metal.

        Hope this helps
        Rob

Rob, I am sure that your cables are correct. I confirmed that the 2981079 negative cable drawing was released in 1960, and it's drawing did not specify that it should be stamped with it's part number. It could have been used on any GM vehicle. I suspect that GM's manufacturing processes were evolving during those years regarding part number identification, date coding, etc. We have certainly seen that in the Corvette community.

The 6286180 positive cable was released several years later. It's drawing specifies that it shall be stamped with it's part number in white ink.

So the JG appears not to be correct as to the marking of the negative cable, and it indicates the wrong part number for the positive cable. (6286188 vs. 6286180).
