    1970 underbody heatshield/splashshield part numbers?

My May built 1970 has the steel heat shield/splash shield attached to the lower firewall. My AIM shows the heat shields as part #'s 3963112 & 3947977. When I look those part number's up I get a description for 68-E69 plastic shields.

What are the part numbers for the steel shields?

My shields are beat to hell with rust, grease, oil, paint, etc.. Do I spend the time to restore (How do I make them gray phosphate again?) or are there correct looking repro's available?

    TIA,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
I believe the shield part numbers are 3976545 and 3976546.
There is a third number for the r.h. shield for a car with a/c, but I can't find it at the moment.
Although mine were in quite good condition I was able to restore the finish by finding a flat pyrex baking dish that was large enough and just deep enough to successfully redo the phosphate finish on them.
Paragon lists the left and right shields. They 'appear' to be accurate in the picture, and reasonably priced.
    Regards,
    Alan

PS: I thought the a/c version of r.h. shield and it's # might be shown in the C60 Section, but it's not. It's noted as being in the list of items that are in the Bill of Materials for C60.

Thanks Alan. Can you post a picture of yours? Trying to figure out how gray is gray?

        Hi Mike,
I used the manganese phosphate rather than zinc phosphate. Manganese is the darker gray of the two.
To my eye the zinc phosphate was too light a gray compared to the traces of the plating that remained on the shields.
Here's a picture of a hood latch with the manganese phosphate on it. I can't get a good picture of either of the shields in place because my camera lens isn't fast enough to get the pic without a flash, and the 'flare' from the flash makes the actual color of the phosphate difficult to see.
        Hope this helps you.
        Regards,
        Alan

You can see mine in at least 2 photos of my car via the link in my signature below. I would characterize them as being even darker than Alan's hood latches, perhaps charcoal gray.

I ordered a set of shields and received these. Obviously I need to speak with them on Monday.

Or refinish them yourself. The original finish is probably halfway between them, but neither of those is close.

                  Mike------

The one on the right looks like it's painted rather than phosphate-finished.

What are the specs on these bolts and do they just pass through the firewall?

It's shown on UPC 1, sheet D9 of the 1970 AIM.

                          Thanks Joe,
I misread the post above with the picture of the bolts. It looks like these shields are attached by studs which are mounted by rivets to the firewall.

                            Hi Mike,

I'm glad to see you still have your L46.

A set of good used shields is an option. Try Sokoloski or another source from Driveline.

Yes, they're attached with studs on the bulkhead/floor.

What type of rivet gun works for these short rivets?
