    69 4sp Shift Lever Removal

After removing the upper and lower shifter boots for replacement, I see that the lower part of the shifter shaft/lever is quite rusty. The part of the lever above the upper boot looks fine, but I'd like to clean up the lower part just for the sake of knowing it's clean.

If I remove the clevis pin and retainer holding the lever to the shifter assembly, can I lift the lever out? If this is doable, am I at risk of disturbing the alignment or creating other reassembly problems? Of course there is other rust on the shifter assembly, but I don't know that I'm capable of removing it all - no lift on site.

    Thanks,
    Mike

Don't think so Mike, I've always remove the complete shifter assembly for any and all work. Once the pin is moved have had to slide the shifter lever out from the bottom side.

From underneath the car, disconnect the three shift rods going to the transmission, remove the two bolts that hold the shifter assy to the shifter mounting bracket, the entire shifter assy will slide out the bottom.

Well Mike and Mike, not what this Mike hoped to hear, but why should I think anything on an old Vette would be simple?

        Thanks guy.
