Temperature Gauge on my 65 holds then jumps to right

While driving my temperature gauge holds actual temperature to about 170-175 degrees then buries itself to the right. What could be the problem?

I had the same thing happen with my '65 temp gauge; ended up being an internal problem with the gauge itself. I sent it in to a reputable Corvette gauge rebuilder for diagnosis and repair. They were able to repair it and it works great now.

Rocco, definitely sounds like a gauge problem/issue. Check the archives for reputable rebuilders and you should be all set. Cheer! ARA

        Rocco -

Sounds to me like an intermittent issue with your sending unit, especially if it occurs suddenly and is unrelated to actual coolant temperature. You can check the gauge easily - with the key "on", pull the connector off the sender, and the gauge should peg immediately to full "cold"; then touch the sender wire terminal in the connector to the engine (ground), and the gauge should peg immediately to full "hot". If the gauge responds in this manner, the gauge is OK and the problem is in the sending unit.

Intermittant short to ground in the wire connecting the sending unit to the gauge. Temporarily replace the wire with a new piece and see if the problem goes away.

            That's what my issue was.

I have ordered a sending unit and sending unit repair kit, I should receive it by the weekend at which point I will give the new parts a try. I did remove the contact from the sending unit and the gauge read cold. I have not connected the wire to the engine ground to see if it reads hot. Thanks for the help, ill let you know how I make out.
