    Door Keys for 1965

    Hi Everyone:

I recently bought a 1965 Coupe, and I only got one key with the car. That key (which appears original) does not open the car doors. I'm assuming the doors are replacements. Is there a place where I can buy new door lock cylinders with keys? I realize I probably can't match new door locks to the ignition key I currently have, but I need to be able to lock this car. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    Hi Matt
see this thread from two days ago.

Pete Lindahl is the man, and Gary Beaupre also does good work.
drop me an email for the details.

      Matt,

I wouldn't automatically assume that the door locks have been replaced. It's actually more likely that the ignition lock has been replaced. Which would be a better situation for you since it's possible to fix the ignition lock to match the doors much easier than vice versa. I would suggest taking a look inside the doors and look at the door locks. If the door locks are original, the 4-digit key code will be stamped into the case of each door lock, which can be visualized most easily if the door locks are removed.

Thanks for the insights, Gary. But I know from the documents I have regarding the cars' restoration that the doors (at least the driver's door) is a replacement. What I'm wondering -- worst case -- can I get some new locks installed and deal with the fact that I will have two keys doing the job that one key used to do. I just want to lock this car! Thanks.

Door locks can be changed to match the ignition.

That's good news, Russ. How do I go about that? Thanks.

Take your door locks out and send them and the key that you want to operate them to Pete Lindahl. 505-663-0995 or 505-412-2389 cell.

I second the recommendation to work with Pete. Very knowledgeable, great work and turnaround time. He did the locks on my '67 and I'm very happy.
