    Adjustable Strut Rods

I'm replacing the "Camber Cam" rear struts with "Adjustable Struts." I've got the parts in and it doesn't look like it's any big deal. I was wondering if anyone, who has done this or had it done, has any suggestions. Also, I was wondering about how long it would take. Thanks in advance,Dan DiCio

My suggestion would be to send them back and keep the stock strut rods and adjusters. A lot of money for zero gain.

      Michael,
I agree, if you can't get the struts adjusted there must be a problem somewhere else in the suspension. I had a set of after market struts on my car and couldn't adjust them properly there wasn't enough adjustment to get the wheels right and found out they were 1/4" longer than the originals. I installed a set of original struts and they are fine now.

Thanks for your responses. Adjustment has never been the problem. I've had this car for almost 30 years. I can't tell you how many times I've adjusted the struts over the years. But, for whatever reason, sooner or later, the cams seem to ultimately work loose. When I was younger and paid close attention; it wasn't that much of a problem. Now, I'm old, and I don't pay close enough attention. It's not until I approach my car from behind, and see that it looks like a hen squatting over eggs, that I realize that its been drifting out of adjustment for a good while. Right now I'm looking at uneven tire wear. Back in the day when you could buy a set of tires for 3 or 4 hundred, it wasn't so bad. Now, the tires I like are 13 or 14 hundred. Bear in mind this car is not a show car; I drive it. I'm just tired of fooling with it. I'm going to have these struts put on, buy a new set of tires, get a 4-wheel alignment and drive the car.

          Dan,
I really doubt the cams are moving. The culprit is the leaf spring is worn out, and most likely the ride height has dropped. As the leaf spring looses it's tension the rear wheel camber goes way negative.

            Re: Adjustable Strut Rods

The adjustable struts are no better at keeping adjustment, probably worse. This is exacerbated by the ones with poly bushings where the twisting motion imparted to the struts as the suspension moves through it's normal range causes the jam nuts to break free.

The stock camber cams and nuts usually slip when the torque on the nut is insufficient. This can be made worse if the threads are worn or corroded. Been there, done that.

Guys, Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your input. You've given me a lot to think about and I guess I need to re-think these struts. Of course, hind-sight is always 20/20. When I had the new frame put in years ago; I included "A" frames, trailing arms and shocks but I never even thought about the spring. Anyway, thanks again. Dan

                Dan,

May times just replacing the rear spring rubber cushions will lift the car up a good inch.
