    63 vs 64 frame

Are there any differences between the 63 and 64 convertible frame?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Michael, let me start by saying the 64 is the closest one to a 63. The differences are the holes in the frame for the e-brake lines. If a 64 is to be used as a 63 you need to add holes and weld some closed. You also need to add the bracket for the e-brake to the left side. You also need to change the body mounts to the taller mounts as there were no rubber cushions in 63. I probably forgot something but others will add.

Mike instead of changing the body mounts maybe use a 64 body mount kit.

Thanks, I'm just looking at a frame on a 63 car that is not the original for that car, trying to figure out if it is actually a 63....There is no VIN stamped on the rear drivers rail...

          Michael,

The firewall body mount has a larger diameter hole than 1963.

I've was under the impression the welded frame mounting positions on the '63 was slightly higher. This being due to use of shims between frame and body on a '63 as opposed to '64 and up using rubber bushings between frame and body.

My 64 frame has gussets, but also there is another serial number also on the driver side on the main side rail top.

                Greg -

It was perfectly normal for Corvette frames to have two VIN derivative stampings on the top of the left side rail; the stamping tool was designed such that it took two die cycles to increment the serial number one character, ready for the next frame.

John, when restoring my 63 frame (a couple years ago), I remember the VIN on top of the frame rail (near the rear wheel), but I don't recall seeing it in another place. You may recall that the frame wasn't rusty, so I'm sure it must be there somewhere, I just didn't notice it. Where do I look for it?

                  Thanks

                    Michael,

It should be a few inches in front of the #3 body mount (in front of the rear tire) on the top.

                      Mike,

Typical 63-64 frames are stamped in two places. One is above the left rear tire on the upper frame. Second is about mid way just under the drivers door on the upper frame.
Same location on both Coupe and Conv.
