    Black distributor mounting gasket

Does anyone know of a high quality (not thin paper) distributor gasket for a 72 small block that isn't bright blue like the Fel-Pro 70194? The original I just removed from a car was black, and I'd prefer to avoid a bright blue gasket in this case. I've thought of using a black Sharpie on the Fel-Pro one, but thought I'd see if there were other options out there. Searching the 'net hasn't yielded me much so far.

    Thanks!

GM #10108445 will do you. It's gray but can be "blackened" if you wish. Otherwise, look for an NOS GM #3932344. I believe these were usually black material. All are thin, though. Once-upon-a-time (WAY before 1972, though) these gaskets used to be CORK. I don't recommend cork, though, for this application. While I LOVE cork (my mouse has been gliding on a cork mousepad for years, a gift from one of the true luminaries of the Corvette world), I don't like it for the distributor gasket. The problem is the distributor often "sticks" to the cork gasket. Then, when one tries to rotate the distributor for a timing adjustment, it's difficult to move and when it breaks-away, the gasket tears and must be replaced.

Patrick, I think you will find most of the auto parts stores carry the Fel Pro gasket line and really never cared for the blue gasket color myself, which is used in many places with a cylinder head or overhaul kits from them. I would try the Sharpe first and see how it looks.

We put one together in the ancient times and smeared Never Seize on both sides of the cork. It worked OK but subsequent engines did not use cork. Steve

Use silicone spray lub on the gasket, cork or otherwise, and wipe down the dist. and manifold mating surfaces with same. Also, most guys crank down the hold down bolt too tight. It just needs to be snug - no more than 10 lb-ft.
