    Delco Remy part numbers

Does anyone know how to interpret the part numbers on a Delco Remy starter? What does the "1107 or 8" mean? What about the last digits as in "7233" mean as far as parts and pieces? How do you "read" the particulars of a starteer by just looking at the part number? Every part number I am familiar with has a meaning as far as the digits, does anyone know the DR scheme?

    Re: Delco Remy part numbers

As I recall at GM there was a part number control group. They were just numbers with no relationship to anything. When an organization, Chevy, Pontiac, etc needed part numbers they would go to the control group and request a batch. Then as the organization needed a new part, they would assign a part number from the batch.

All it really was, was number control, nothing more. The combination of a part number on a part, the date if it had one is the relationship to a car. Meaning starter 1107242 dated in 3A22 is good for a corvette after January 22, 1963 for 6 months.

As Harry mentions, blocks of part numbers were assigned to various GM divisions. Seven digit part numbers of the series 110xxxx were among the series assigned to Delco-Remy Division. Within that series, Delco-Remy (or any division assigned a part number block) could assign final part numbers as they saw fit. Delco-Remy assigned the block 1107xxx to starters from the early 50's through 1967. The last three digits were assigned more-or-less sequentially. However, Delco-Remy made starters for all of GM car and truck lines as well as other makes. Some starter part numbers had applications across several car lines; some were applicable only to a single car line or, even, only a particular model.

The block 1108xxx was assigned to starters from 1968 through about 1977. Block 1109xxx to starters from about 1978 to about 1982. There were also other blocks of part numbers assigned to starters after about 1979.
