1956 to 1962 Glove Box Lock Details

Just sharing some info while I took one apart the other day. Someone installed a GB lock and it was jammed tight. Couldn't open it up easily.

You know me by now....I couldn't resist. While I was at it I took out the camera.

    See attached.

I may have missed, in your comments, on how to keep the cylinder from turning 360o. I have found that the end of the housing where the two nubs are filing until corrected. Is this how you correct or maybe you have a better solution.

Jerry, I'll have to experiment with the cylinder I have here. I don't recall if the cylinder on this one turns 360* or not.

I'll check it in the morning and get back to you.

Jerry, Thanks for reading this thread and asking that question. You've caught a flaw in these tricky contraptions.

Is yours a reproduction or original?

This reproduction I have here turns 360*, it should not, but I just discovered why.

I have 2 originals here, one from a '59, and one from a '56, and they only turn 90* as designed.

The reproductions have a design defect, and that large washer is in fact needed to prevent the repro from turning 360*. It's a band-aid. I've used a few and have never seen any special instructions. They're leaving out an important piece of information. However, it makes installation and removal extremely tedious.

I'll have to update my document to show the differences. But here are a few pics of the differences. I had to carefully install the cylinder in the housing, and use a tiny pic to push EACH tumbler one at a time past the washer. Then had to get the lock tab past it for the last step. The last pic shows the lock tab(blue) and the washer(red). The washer must be installed before the escutcheon chrome ring, therefore installing the cylinder is much more difficult after installing the assembly to the glove box door.

Repro left, Original right(from a '56) You can see differences in the housing and the ends of the cylinders. Also, not show is the difference in height of the escutcheon ring. it's about

Removing this arrangement when it's installed in a completed glove box door will be even more painful.

I have three originals, two work without filing. The problem is the nubs aren't long enough so the filing prevents turning. Washer not needed.Jerry

Jerry, which nubs are you filing, the ends of the housing? You say they're not long enough? The original on the '56 I have here has no nubs on the housing, and it works fine, turns only 90*

Yes only the repros appear to need the washer to prevent them from turning 360*.

If you put the washer on the original lock like I did because they sold the locking ring with it, I make its almost impossible to turn the key. Mine only turn 90 degrees without the washer. Be careful what the Corvette vendors sell you.

Pat, I think that's because the repro cylinder is slightly longer than originals. You can see that in my photo above where they're side by side. Either that or the housings are slightly different. The inside view above shows some internal differences between the two also.

And yes, this is another case of repro parts that just don't fit right.
