C3 Ammeter - Restore or Repop?

After correcting some bigger issues on my 69, I finally decided to tackle an ammeter that wouldn't zero with the ignition off. The needle "rested" at about 1 o'clock. Not finding any posts about DIY adjustments, I removed the gauge to see if there might be any way to adjust the needle. Looking at it closely I saw that the needle was bent slightly away from the face. Though this had nothing to do with the no-zero problem, I thought I'd try a very light touch to flatten the needle back in place. You guessed it - it broke off (right at the button). I barely touched it. Considering the needle wouldn't zero anyway, I take some comfort in believing the meter was going to need professional attention, so I don't feel too bad.

From what I've read here, and have seen in Driveline, restoration is possible, but more costly that repops. Many sources have repops at about $60. They all look alike so I wonder if one company makes them all.

I'd appreciate some thoughts from you folks. Restore or repop? What's your recommendation for your favorite source for your suggested solution?

Sidebar: While I have it all out, I'd like to freshen up the gauge bezel and wiper switch plate. The TIMJG states they should be semi-gloss black. The TMIJG describes the console top plate as satin-black. Is it safe to assume these are the same color? Does anyone know of a Krylon or Duplicolor number that would work?

One last question: What is a good source for the wiper switch plate screws?

    Thanks everyone.

Frequent poster here, Joe Ray, can fix you up with a new guage.

The "GM Restoration Parts" ammeter sold by many vendors is a perfect match. I have one, no one would ever know by looking at it.

Update: Joe Ray is sending me a used ammeter that should look more like the other 45 year old gauges (with regard to slightly faded colors).

I found the SEM Trim Black paint and I'll prep the bezel for repainting. I painted the bezel years ago, back with authenticity wasn't important to me, so I have a question. Does the unpainted vertical edges of the bezel include 1/8" or so of the inside surface? Or is only the facing surface unpainted? Maybe the attached photo will help clarify my questions.

          Thanks,
          Mike
