Chassis Hole Repair for Parking Brake Cable Bracket Bolts

    Folks:

I'm assembling my chassis this week and found that both holes for the right hand side parking brake cable bracket (on frame crossmember just forward of the RR wheel) do not have enough thread left to tighten down the bolts. I am not looking at them right now but they are probably 5/16 in diameter thread. Can ya'll provide some suggestions on methods you've used in the past to repair bolt holes in the frame? Of course the frame metal is not that thick so there are only two or three threads in the hole anyway. I'd like to be able to use the correct bolts thus I've so far avoided drilling and tapping larger holes.

    Thanks in advance!

    Regards,
    Roger

Your best bet is going to be a sleeve-type thread repair like a Time-Sert. Otherwise, weld the hole closed, grind smooth and re-drill.

Thank you Joe. I'm not familiar with the Time-Cert. I'll check that out.

Can someone tell me what size the bolts are for this bracket? Are they 5/16 in dia, 18 threads per inch?

          Hi Roger,
The bolts on my 71's brackets are 5/16"-18 x 9/16".
It's the same bolt as used on the brake line to frame clips.

I used a nutserts or rivnut for the same issue with great results. It requires a special tool to install the rivnut.

Here's a tool I picked up several years ago to repar some belly pan mountings on a 300 SL. Not something I use often, but invaluable when it's needed. Offered in both Metric and SAE thread.

Easy way is to use a metric fastener.

Thanks everyone for alkl those great suggestions. Heven't been able to get back to the computer until this morning. I ended up using a Fastenal E-Z Lock. Here is a link for those that might also find this handy in the future. The red stuff on the threads is some sort of bonding agent that reacts between the metals when threaded into the material. Since the frame material thickness was small, I guess there were'nt enough threads to bond them together. I'll probably have to get some sort of adhesive to bond the E-Z Lock into the newly threaded hole.

These are similar to a Time-Sert.
