1963/1964 327/300 Stamped Steel Valve Cover Embossed Labels

The current 63/64 TIMJG stated that all 1963 and 1964 Corvettes equipped the base or L75 engine should have the gold and black embossed metal labels.

I flight judged a 1964 327/300 Bowtie candidate (VIN 72xx) last Friday at the North Central Regional and noticed that the valve covers did not have the embossed metal labels. The car appears to be an untouched original.

I'm prepping my car for flight judging at the national convention in July and want to get it right.

    What's correct???

    Thanks,

Looking at my '63 Parts book, the stamped steel (embossed) emblem for the center of the valve cover does not appear to have been serviced. One other interesting item, the "O" stamped on the gasket flange is to face the INBOARD side of the cover. Interference with the rocker arms will result with incorrect placement.

      Bill,

So is it is not supposed to be a metal label, specifically for both 1963 and 1964 cars?

      Thanks,

James, I had my 63 judged at Chapter and Regional with the metal labels, no deductions.

My statement is only to state that the individual labels were not supplied with the valve covers nor available IN SERVICE per the '63 parts book.

I guess per the TGJIM I'll put on the embossed metal labels. As I said I observed a Bowtie candidate 1964 last week with a 327/300 that was built approximately 2,000 cars before mine that did not have the embossed metal valve civer labels.

            Thanks,

Just got this an email from a person that was there:

The metal label was used for all of 62 and into possibly very late 63 as the AIM change date is 4/2/63. Remember AIM changes may be long before it hits the assembly line.

It was originally installed at the Flint engine plant before the paint operation. It was a three part label. One tear off on the sticky side and one over the top to mask it during the paint operation. After paint, the top mask portion was removed. That's why you sometimes see small amounts of orange paint along the edge of originals.

At some point during 63 production, the whole process changed. The Flint plant no longer installed the label. The new label was not metal but rather a sticker. This new sticker was used through the rest of 63 and all of 64. (and 65 I suppose)

Look in your 63 AIM. I'm pretty sure there was a date shown when the new sticker was added.

Yes, the labels were not available in SERVICE (sort of). They were not available under a regular GM part number or carried in any P&A catalog I know of. However, through some route or another, Chevrolet dealers of the day were able to obtain them and often had them for sale in the glass showcases in the parts department. These were the original, factory installed labels and not reproductions. I once purchased some original 396 Chevelle air cleaner labels from a Chevrolet dealer way back in the late 60's or early 70's. I still have them around here somewhere.

By the way, the original labels had an adhesive that actually STUCK and was DURABLE. I've never seen a reproduction with an adhesive that was durable.

It's me again and just to make sure! The 63-64 judging manual is WRONG AGAIN?

                  Thanks,

Somebody help me out here, my 300hp car built November 62 has (I installed) the metal label plus the 300 decal. Is that correct?

I believe that to be correct.
