The generator on my 58 doesn't have a identification tag on it or holes in the casing where one has been installed. Does this mean the generator is from a passenger car or did some vettes come without a tag. It does have a shaft for a tach drive but is missing the gear drive. I plan on drilling holes to install a tag. My car was built on July 16, what would be the correct model number and date to put on a new identification tag ?

Re: 58 Generator don't have identification tag
Does it have the extension for the Tach drive (used on all except 290hp FI cars) and the extended shaft to fit into the tach drive housing that should be bolted to the rear of the generator? If not, better to find a real generator rather than trying to correct what you have.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: 58 Generator don't have identification tag
Brandon, Many generators of the era got rebuilt at auto electric shops, and the parts were often swapped out. Then one could be built from all of the pieces on the shelves, which were often a mix and match of cases, end frames and drive frames. Here's a link which has ID information that may help and some measurement to help ID what you have. See the Addendum at the end.

Re: 58 Generator don't have identification tag
Brandon,Some years ago I bought a rebuilt generator still in the rebuilders box at a swap meet. No tag or other ID on it but it had the tach drive shaft so I took a chance. Turned out to be the real deal 1102043. Even looking very closely I couldn't find the holes for the tag drive screws until I looked inside the frame. The tag had probably been removed with a chisel and the screw stubs were flush with the outside and painted over. The point is, if you can't find the tag screws from the outside, look inside the case (probably have to remove the armature to get a good enough view). The holes should be about mid-way between the field coils towards the top and front. The stubs were easy to drive out from the inside. Hope this helps.- Top

Re: 58 Generator don't have identification tag
yes it has the tach drive shaft and the correct end frames. The only thing I can find wrong is no holes for the tag rivets. Rod Kramer told me someone may have chiseled the rivets off and painted over them making the holes not to show up. I need to look closer, may require taking it apart to find the holes. Thanks for your feedback.- Top

Re: 58 Generator don't have identification tag
Rod, I just went and removed the paint off the area the tag goes and I found the same thing you did on yours. It also had 9019 stamped on it. Thanks very, very much for your help. It had crossed my mind to remove the paint but I guess I just got fooled. My car was built on July 16th, what date do you think would be good to get put on a tag?- Top

Re: 58 Generator don't have identification tag
Rod Kramer was correct, the rivets had been cut off smooth and painted over. Thanks for your help.- Top
