Larry, the way the auto 4x4 works is each wheel has a speed sensor and when one wheel is spinning faster on one side the computer activates auto 4x4 and will engage transfer case. To test you'll need to have all 4 wheels of the ground and select switch in Auto mode. once the rear wheel speed is greater at one wheel the front will engage. My take is that if you can manually engage 4x4 High Its likely the Auto is working.

      Larry:

Check for any recalls on your vehicle. I had the same vehicle and a motor would work intermittently. As I recall it was a common problem that was covered under some sort of recall. I believe the cause was some sort of seal that was faulty that allowed water to enter and damage the motor that controls 4wd.

Wow, I get advised that I am on the wrong forum , for asking about temporarily swapping in a five speed before total restoration on my 67 roadster, and this is an acceptable topic?

To everybody that helped me: Big Thanks:

I think the dealer and I will come to an agreement. Special thanks to our moderator for letting this thread survive. Every now and then a member needs help with other Chevrolet vehicles than Corvettes. No other discussion board has the "Original Chevy knowlege" than this board. Yes even in 4 Wheel drive questions. I got my answers here
              as always. My thanks. Larry
