Firewall splash/heat shield positions

High guys, I'm at the point where its to my advantage to re-mount the splash shields back on the firewall. My problem is I haven't a clue as to just exactly where to put them as I have no mounting reference points. Is there a chance that there weren't any to begin with. Secondly, I have an abundance of insulation retainers a Ross the firewall as well as down into the tranny tunnel next to the already mounted tunnel insulation. Anyone have any opinions and pictures for references? I have digital shots of the firewall but for some reason, my wonderful droid won't let me down load them. Any help would be appreciated.

The configuration of the splash shields and insulation changed a number of times over the course of the 1968 and 69 model years. What is the year and build date of your car?

As John stated the year and the production point of the car. As it shows in your profile you have a 1968. If the car is a early car it did not have them installed the shield did not appear till much later in 1968 production.

Hi John & Paul,
My original was a K07 small block body. My donor body is a K24 body and I have no idea was engine option this body had if it makes any difference.

Being that both your original car and your donor body are very late production they were probably built the same way.

From your production date I think you should have configuration #3 from the tread. Picture of it are attached below.

From my observations I have not seen the engine option affect the insulation and splash shield configurations.

If the car originally had the heat shields, I would think there would be evidence on the frame or the firewall of the brackets or fasteners either being now present or having been once present.

I would agree with Joe there should be evidence of the mounting studs and bolt/screw holes in the trans. cross rail.

The floor pan area isn't my issue guys, it's up on the firewall and the placement of these splash shields and if they were even installed at all. I have the floor pan tin work and the frame has all the "correct" mounting points for them.

I looked at my old body and there is NO evidence on the shields ever having been there at all. The new body exhibits the same thing. Though the driver's side has been repaired, I see no evidence of mounting hardware at all except for the tin tabs that extend into the engine bay from the floor pan beyond the radius up onto the firewall.

If the car had had the firewall shields there would be studs seen on the firewall, about mid-height.

The studs were part of stud plates that was attached to the firewall with 2 rivets. So, even if the stud plates are gone there should be 3 holes on each side. No holes= no shields were ever installed.

Definitely no studs on the firewall as shown in your pics. Joe Maybe I have two of those most revered and coveted "shieldless" 68s that's worth millions!!!!! Ok, back to reality.

I'm not going to get all beat up over this and am going to move ahead "without" the shields. It's obvious now that they were never there. Strange though that my old New York body and the donor body I got from Colorado both have the same conditions.

Maybe this is one of those "is there anyone else out there with K series bodies without the shields?" questions for a judging references.

Just curious if anyone else has pics of the installed insulation blankets I can use for reference. In the vendor rags, they option two individual oddly shaped insulation pieces for either right or left side pans. I plan to make my own blankets so seeing finished products would be a great help.
