Does any body make a good reproduction 396 air cleaner assy that will pass judging ? What happened to all the originals ? I have never seen one at a swap meet ,and mine is long gone .

You can modify the repros to appear correct. If I remember correctly the original base did not have the hump for the crankcase on the opposite side. A little hammer and dolly work take care of that.Dick Whittington- Top

Bill,
I bought the base from LIC and it passed regional judging yesterday.
I found a correct style lid on EBay, had it dechromed and sent it to Richard Fortier to have it painted and stenciled. No problems at the chapter or regional meets so far.

Re: 65 396 air cleaner assy.
Bill,
I want to say that it does have the correct hump as compared to the 66/67 BB air cleaner base. I will take some pictures of it tomorrow night when I get back over to the shop. The car did well at the North Central Regional meet last weekend. We've got some things to correct but based on our flight scores we have qualified for the Duntov Award if we get passed the PV test next year in Denver.
