I realize there were only 479 of these cars made.
I realize most had the scoops installed and the covers removed from the screen. I realize most of the covers never made it back on.
I realize that if the covers were left on the screens, they have been there 50+ years.
I realize I may be looking for a needle in a haystack.
BUT:
Does anyone have pristine unmolested backing plates with screen covers intact? Do they have a "thin paper gasket" around the outer edge of the irregularly shaped cover? The story "out there" says they should have those.
I've owned 6 sets of original backing plates over the years. I just had opportunity to look at the finest original unmolested set I have seen. Screen covers apparently have never been removed. Original fasteners appear unmolested. I couldn't see any evidence of the supposed paper gasket anywhere. I couldn't resist--with permission, I took one cover off. No evidence of a paper gasket. Has anyone ever seen those? Can anyone document those as original?
Thanks!
