    1967 Strange Pad Stamp

Hi Members. Looked at a 67 convertible yesterday, and only took a few photos of the engine pad. I didn't see the large stamped #s above the VIN until I got home, and viewed them on my computer.

After cleaning the pad with a rag and lacquer thinner, the broach marks looked fine to me, as I am guessing not too many people would probably stamp a 300hp car. After I arrived home, I found these larger #s stamped above the VIN area, which I am not sure what they are.

Could they be from a Machine Shop when they rebuilt the motor, or just a re-stamp gone bad? I have personally never seen anything like this before, and would enjoy the opinion from the more experienced members on this board.

    Thank you for your time,

    Steve

The broach and VIN look good, but the engine date/suffix don't. They should have been stamped using a gang holder and they were not.
Clean the entire pad and take another picture or two.

      Steve,

You are correct as many rebuilders stamp their own numbers on blocks when they warranty their work.
Good stamp and probably original to the Corvette. Nothing wrong with crooked letters as the holder wears out after several thousand hits from a hammer. You would too!!

Agree with Joe Ray on the rebuilder stamp. The vin stamp looks great. Have a photo of 7100110 and the first 5 characters are dead on. It seems Flint made alot of 327/250-300 engines without knowing the final use for the engine. Have seen many with the the last character added later. It seem the HP code is the one most often seen in the 327/350 but with so many H something type codes I don't think it was that uncommon on some of the very early and very late engines. Some H something codes for 327/300 HE, HH, HO, HR,

The comments by Page above are dead-on, could not have said it better....We (I) have seen rebuilders stamps or mechanics shop stamps as they are known
on the judging field from time to time; And Note: it is not really any big deal on points hits (if any).... This is not a "strange" stamp pad at all

I've seen a number of pads with similar rebuilder stamps on it. One fellow would stamp his initials on the pad, he was in the Southern Illinois area and I had a '66 425 horse with his initials on the pad. This pad looks good, I'm glad he didn't deck it.

I wish to thank all of you for your opinions and advice on this car. I bought it this morning, and it is now at my home. It is just a 300hp, 4 speed car, with side pipes, after market bolt-ons, and Vintage AC. It drives great, and looks just as nice. He had put an original big block hood on it many years ago, which will stay on the car for the near future.

I have attached a photo of the car at my home.

Thanks again for all of your help,

              Steve

The car and hood look great, nice car with the original engine. You have one of the best driver cars on the planet and you're going to love it.

It looks like the car that was built just before yours was a 427/435.

Nice looking car. This is where I'm at these days as well; good lookin', good drivin' car. My '67 has add on side pipes (don't know that yours are or not) because I like 'em and they keep a non-A/C coupe cooler. I've already driven $20,000 off of a $55,000 restoration 9 years ago and do not regret it one bit. Congratulations on your purchase.

Thanks for all of your compliments. The '67 looks great in the garage next to the Pennant Blue '55 that I picked up recently. I am completely out of garage and driveway space now, so I have rented a storage unit today.

I will keep the '70 Donnybroke Green 454 vert in there, as well as the '72 Steel Cities Gray LT1 vert. My Black/Silver '57, 4speed, 245 hp is at my friend's shop now, as I just had the engine compartment completely detailed. The '57 will also go into storage this weekend.

Fortunately, the storage complex is next to my community here, so I can walk there when ever I need to drive one of the C3s or '57. I am getting married in 2 weeks, and my fiance thinks I am completely out of my mind buying so many cars. The upside is, she has grown to love them also, and has been there for every one of my purchases, except for today's '67. Now her favorites are the '55 and '67. We both have the same taste in cars.

Thanks again for everyone's help and compliments. I have posted a couple of photos I took just now.

                      Have a great weekend,

Sweet collection of Corvettes. Hope you can find enough time to "exercise" each one. You're going to love your '67...IMHO, best of the bunch.
