C1 Shifter Console Plate Special Nut

I removed the shifter console plate to replace a torn shifter boot on my '62. That special nut that attaches to the underneath of the console hump for the screw that holds down the plate is lost. If I remember correctly to 30 years ago when I installed the old boot, it wouldn't stay in place anyway. So, at that time, I used an ordinary nut. I can do that again. But I'm looking for a more elegant solution that doesn't require me to get under the car and at the same time find a helper who will turn down the screw from the top. I can't be the first person who has had this problem. Anybody have any solutions that worked for them?
