JG states the "valve covers are stamped steel, painted engine orange color, with stands in the middle and upper rear" i tend to disagree in that i believe the drivers side had but one stand, in the middle and lacked the upper rear stand. anybody agree, disagree? i realize the JG is the winter of 2003, fifth edition. mike

I'm pretty sure that a left side rear wire stand bracket was not used for 1965 L-78. However, it is possible that this was a feature that varied from car-to-car. In other words, in this very early era of the Mark IV there may have been some "confusion" or "variation" in parts like valve covers installed at Tonawanda. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 65 396 drivers side valve cover
Mike . I screwed up again I depended on my memory . The stand on the left side is the same as the 67 I have it is 10 1/4 " from the front .. 11 1/2" from the rear.. 3" from the bottom ..4 " from the top . & 2 1/2 back from the center of the oil hole . the measurements are to the center of the stand .
There are two small wire clips on the top edge for the temp sending wire .- Top

Re: 65 396 drivers side valve cover
Doc,
VIN 22161 has only one stand in the middle of the drivers side valve cover. See attached picture.

Re: 65 396 drivers side valve cover
Here's the original driver side valve cover on (or off, to be precise) # 23564. From the inside, looks like the 2-wire retainer might have been brazed (back ?) on.
No rear inboard wire stand on valve cover, which agrees with AIM L78, sheet B3. Look at item 18 #2977995. [retainer for LH and RH]. Looks like it was installed at St.Louis, so expect considerable variation in location.Attached FilesLast edited by Wayne M.; May 1, 2014, 01:36 PM.- Top

Like I said before, there were a "jillion" different variations of these big block valve covers. Most involved only bracket configuration and placement of same. However, there were also differences in the covers, themselves. Taken together, there were a very large number of possible combinations. Most were not available in SERVICE, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
