    70 Exhaust tip clamps?

Which style exhaust tip clamps would be accurate for a 1970 VIN 09516? The TIMJG shows one style clamp, the AIM another. The car pictured is VIN 00028, which looks like the clamps have an up-turned end on it. TIA, Mike

This is what I have available, the one on the right with the up-turned ends.

      Mike,

      A couple of comments.

First, the photos in the AIM are only meant to vaguely resemble the part installed. There are many cases when they are not really correct at all.

Second, VIN 28 has replacement tips and one replacement muffler. I'd bet that the clamps you're looking at may not be original to the car.
The owner might stop in here in tell us, but that's my take on it.

The clamp on the right is closer to what the original clamps looked like. They had the upturned end with an invented V looking piece of metal.

Mike, I believe that Paragon Corvette sells a correct clamps for the tips. in your second pic. that appears like the correct lower half.

Reproduction clamp appears to be zinc plated. Originals were, per JG, natural finish or black, likely black phosphate in some photos I have of low mile cars.
So, if you buy a repro you may want to think about changing the finish.

Also, note the above AIM picture shows nuts and washers - the repro sells a nut with a flange, or integrated washer as an option - see pic below.

As Patrick stated can be ether natural, Black plated I think is black oxide and have seen natural and black plating all in one clamp. What I mean is the threaded section could be natural the nuts washers and body black plated etc. Here is a photo of muffler to tip clamp.

                  Bob
Bob, would a little action with a grinder or Dremel make the repro appear closer to the original? Any chance of a photo like Mike's above with them laying on their sides?

It might be possible, but the area is a little tight to get into. I might just give it a try to see if can be done.
