What is the best way to adjust the lifters?......New engine, I set each cylinder @ tdc(cold) and ran the nuts down until I had all slack out of push rod(turning it) and then added 1/2 turn.Or can I do this running, backing off each nut till noisy and tighting back to quiet plus 1/2 a turn.....I have a little rocker arm noise on a 402" BBC with about an hour of run time.....I used an old distributor to prime engine and had oil at the top of all rockers when going thru adjustment....

Re: Hydraulic lifter adjustment............
Paul, You adjusted the hydra. lifters as I do, Zero lash and about a 1/2 turn, you can go as much as one turn. I would listen to find out which side the noise is coming from and pull the cover and just re check, I hate making a mess with a running engine.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: Hydraulic lifter adjustment............
Paul/Ed,
The Winter 1988 Restorer has dimensioned instructions to modify sacrificial small block steel valve covers so that they can be used to very neatly and cleanly adjust rocker arms with the engine running. I added short pieces of duct tape over the unused holes to make the process almost sanitary.

Paul - Just noticed you're working with a 402. This modification won't help you.

Re: Hydraulic lifter adjustment............
You can adjust all hydraulic lifters, engine cold and not running at #1 and #6 TDC of the compression stroke. It's written up in every Chevrolet service manual I've ever seen.
Rather than twisting the pushrod, I recommend wiggling it up and down until all clearance is gone. Twisting is not as accurate IMO.
