John, I use one of the thin, plastic painter's drop cloths when I need dust protection. Light, cheap, and disposable when dirty, they don't scratch the paint.

Best? I dunno. But it works for me.

        Jim,

Are you using the drop clothes on lacquered cars or the newer paints ?

Reason I ask is that the rubber back fender pads can mar the newer paints, but not lacquer.

Both, Gary. I don't discriminate on the basis of lacquer or BC/CC. I've got cars with both types of paint and have used these drop cloths on them all. And just to be clear, what I use are the extremely thin, translucent, plastic sheets which are erroneously called "cloths".

When I cover a car with one of these "drop cloths", I use a marking pen to write something like "UP" on the plastic. By doing that, I don't accidentally put one back on upside down (and dusty side down) later on.

            Jim,
This is a BuBa story about a guy that had his car painted in the early 70's.
When he picked up his freshly painted car from Earl Shieb they told him to put it in the garage for 24 hrs.
Not having a garage he bought a drop cloth and covered the car. You know the end of this story, the fresh paint solvents bonded the plastic to the paint.
I do think the drop cloth works as I have covered my car with regular cloth sheets only finding that the dust seems to get on the car any way. The plastic is hard to keep in place but NO dust. Eventually I will look into the Cal car cover but now the plastic works.

John, I have two thick/heavy indoor 100% cotton with flannel lining from Mid America I have used since about '96 and I have been very pleased that they do not let dust in and provide good protection from light bumps and scratches. I also have another 100% cotton with flannel lining on the '57 I purchased from Marion Weber at MG Mitten nearly 50 years ago with same performance. The '57 cover is very much like the current Beverly Hills and California companies covers. I am about ready to retire the '57's cover and get a new one. I will get samples of the fabric used by a few companies of the cotton with flannel lining. The cotton with flannel lining covers hold up very well along with providing protection. To Gary's point the covers are used on lacquer and enamel, no BC/CC. Steve

Several bed sheets sewn together to make one piece long enough to cover entire car. Don't be surprised if you find that you use the car less, since taking a cover off and replacing it each time quickly becomes so tiresome that you just don't bother to drive the car.

This is my cover of choice. That being said, I rarely use it as the car doesn't get that dusty in the garage. It's, also, a bit of a pain to remove and roll up. Besides, I like to just walk out in the garage and look at my baby

                            John -

I don't use them much any more, but I've always used the cotton/flannel covers from California Car Cover; don't remember their trade name for it, but it's gray cotton on the outside and soft flannel on the inside; breathes, and won't scratch your paint.
