Next 4: the third shows where I think the interference might be: foreground, below bolt at the bottom of the rib there is a bright spot. Does the clearance in the pics between the rotor and backing plate look correct? Last to follow in next post

It should go on at this stage. I'm not sure it affects your clearance question, but?

Hi Alan. The steering arm in in the first set of pics. I guess I need one or two from the back for clarity. I have the caliper support bracket bolted to steering armand to the spindle. I tried placing the caliper bracket between the steering arm and spindle, but thatwas just wrong. I will post a coup, e of better pics soonest..thnaks again...joe

Thank-you Alan! These pics helped a GREAT deal. I noticed two things:
1) the spindle "boss" at the base of the spindle seems to be a little higher than the backing plate/dust shield on yours, but flush or a little recessed on mine. I don't know why.
2) Your dust shield lies flat to the spindle, while mine (see attached photos) seems to be raised at some points, even bent or deformed? I don't know how I would have done that in the dis-assembly since it seems pretty robust and not all that fragile. This could be the source of my issue. I may either try to re-form it or just buy a replacement.

Does this make any sense to anyone?

Hi Joe,
Looking at your latest pictures it certainly appears that the dust shield has been bent somehow.
Also the direction it's been bent would likely cause a problem with the shield's clearance with the rotor.
Here's a different pic that shows of how flat the shield is where it meets the spindle, and the shape/angle of the shield's 'legs' as they transition away from that seat area.
You might try to straighten your existing shield holding the option of purchasing of a new one in reserve.

Perhaps there is a difference between midyears and 1969's but it looks to me you have the bolts that hold the steering knuckler are in backward. All the drawings I have seen have the nuts on the inside.

Hi Mike: I thought that might be the case when I saw Alan's pictures, but I am sure the way I have them is the way they came apart. This also looks correct from the exploded diagrams I've seen with the bolt heads being outboard and the nuts being inboard. Also, when I have been working on this, in my setup, the bolts protruding into the rotor area would seem to interfere with the rotor. Thanks...Joe

Thanks Alan: I cannot imagine how I bent that splash shield but that looks more and more like my problem. I would have NEVER figured that out without your pictures! I don't hold much hope of re-forming it back, since the metal might be stretched out by now, but that's my first option. My only guess about how I distorted it in the first place would be when I re-assembled it for the FIRST time, I must have had some misalignment and when I torqued the nuts, it bent the splash..Many Thanks and deepest regards...Joe
