1970 PF-25 oil filters were white and had an embossed bottom (i.e raised lettering). The original assembly line filters were most likely silk-screened in black and were never available in SERVICE. The SERVICE filter had the silk screening in blue and red and it's as close as you can get in a SERVICE filter.

None of the reproductions have an embossed bottom.

Sometime in the 1970 model year it is believed that the embossing was discontinued and a smooth bottom was introduced. Early/Mid production is the best theory at this time. Original filters have an unpainted bead (crimp) at the top but obviously that can be duplicated on the reproductions with the use of paint remover. The quality of the silk screening is not nearly as crisp on the originals. Reproductions are very clear/crisp.

For all just be aware that the reproductions are a 60% deduction for configuration, finish and date or 5 points.

The embossed lettering was removed from the engineering drawings on January 3, 1972. However, it is not known when the actual change was made in the shell dies. Normally, engineering changes are implemented after the prints are changed because it is the authorization to make the change. However, in some cases, engineering would issue a "Deviation Permit" to allow a change to be made prior to the print change if there was an urgency to make the change such as high die maintenance cost or leaks in the embossed areas. Without supporting data, it could be assumed the change have found its way to the assembly line in 3 to 6 months before or after January, 1972. One clue could be to look for replacement filters in original boxes of both embossed and smooth filters and check the date codes on the boxes. The caution here is that the boxes could have been produced and date stamped weeks or months before they were used. Also, since no part numbers were changed, the assembly line could use either design for a period of time, using whatever came from the stock room since "first in- first out" was not practiced in manufacturing or assembly plants back then.

                          Don,
Your suggesion on the box dates is how I concluded that the embossment was phased out sometime in 1970. I've seen on service embossed filters that most boxes have 1969 dates and a small number have 1969-1970 dates. Never seen a box with a 1970 only date by itself. Your guidance is very helpful.

Does anyone have any experience with the PF-25's from Rock Auto ? I have never purchased anything from them.
