1969 front brake backing plate"gasket"?

I pulled the front rotors and backing plates off and noticed some kind of gasket like material around the spindle behind the backing plate, but only on one side. I don't see this in the assembly guide or the service or overhaul manuals. Shall I replace the missing material with the self-made gasket stuff? Thanks...Joe

Yes, a gasket was originally used. It was GM #3953431. It's discontinued but I believe reproductions are available from sources like Dr. Rebuild. You could also make a satisfactory gasket from gasket stock.
