1967 Ignition Top Shield Front Clip

My clip that engages the air cleaner broke off a bit below the rivets. I ordered a replacement with rivets from a couple of different suppliers. I am now confused about what the clip is supposed to look like. I am beginning to wonder if the shield I have is even a '67' based on what the clips look like and the shape of the front of the top shield. One of the clips I received looked correct but when I attempted to flex it to conform to the curve of the front of the shield, the chrome separated from the clip on the back. One of the clips I received is a J shaped clip and the other which looks like it would work better, is a bit straighter than the J shape. Does anyone have a picture or information on what was correct for 1967? Here are some pictures of my shield and the clips I received.

    Thank you

    Steve,

I think the one that looks like a J is correct or your 67. The other may be also OK but just not bent correctly.

Take a look at this thread for pictures of my 67 clip project, with the before and after clips and the tool I used to set the rivets:

The rivets should be hollow rivets and I remember having a problem finding rivets with the right head size and finish.

      Thanks for your reply.
The one thing I am really concerned with is the shape of the portion of the shield that covers the distributor. The rivets are closer to the portion that bends out to clear the distributor on mine than the ones I have seen and the one you pictured. My shielding had the J shaped clip originally and I managed to get a replacement riveted on but it broke when I tried to put the air cleaner on the car. It is almost like the clip is too high to accommodate the air cleaner. This is why I wondered if the shield I have is actually for a '66' or '67'. The holes and front shape of the shield in your project don't look exactly like mine. Where did you get your hole punch? What brand did you find? I am going to get one and have seen some that look like they would do the job on Amazon.com.

      Thanks
      Steve

        Steve,

I do see a difference in the shape of the shield and position of the clip between yours and mine in the fifth archived post below. My shield is original to my car which is a late 67 327/300HP. I have my original air cleaner and the engine has never been out of the car or overhauled. Maybe your shield is from another car or a replacement. Maybe someone with a 66 or earlier will chime in.

The clip is intended to bear against the underside of the air cleaner base with a little spring force.

I went through couple of vendors to find the right clip. The one I used was from LIC and was the J clip one. I think they even had the right rivets, although I bought some extra 1/8" hollow rivets and washers from a local hardware store to experiment with the tool I made up.

The tool is just a cheap hole punch with a 3" throat which I got online (either Amazon or Harbor Freight). I made up the backing for the head and used a punch from another set as the driving part.

        Have fun
