    Exhaust/Flywheel

I recently purchased a 68 427/435 at auction. The car has side exhaust which I know did not come on 68's yet the rear valance has no exhaust outlets nor has it been filled. My build date is Oct. 28th. The technical and judging manual indicated that some December cars might have had side exhaust. Am I to believe that someone replaced the rear valance and put the side exhaust on the car or is my build date close enough to have been one manufactured with side exhaust? When I purchased the car it ran but when the driver delivered it the starter was shot and some teeth on the flywheel had been knocked off. Can I just pull the tranny to replace the flywheel or does the engine need to be pulled? I'm new at this stuff but I'd like to do the work myself if I can.

I highly doubt any 1968's were originally built with side exhaust. For one thing, it was not on the order form. So, how would anyone have ordered it?

As far as the flywheel goes, you do not need to remove the engine. Removing the transmission and bellhousing is all that needs to be done.

This may sound like a big lie, but I was invited to see a 68 here in Palm springs that was a special order, if that makes sence.
It did not have rear exhaust and as I remember it had aluminum heads and special exhaust. The owner is well respected and has knowledge of how this could happen.
I can call him and put you in touch. E-mail me if your interested and I will forward it to him after I call him.
I don't want to touch this one with a ten foot pole.
