What is a CE block? GM documents

See the scan, second photo. I have these for at least 1969-1972, and their numbering and terminology is consistent throughout. It's not "Counter Exchange" or any of those other creative things that we've seen. It's simply "Chevrolet" "Engine".

I am pretty sure there is one for 1968 and some earlier also. Those information bulletins also have ALL the engine suffix codes and transmissions and differentials that were used by the Chevrolet Assembly plants. One has to dig a little farther to find the suffix codes for irrigation and stationary uses.

We documented this some years ago on our CRG (Camaro Research Group) website:

This coding system must have ended by 1975. In 1975 I purchased a new Chevrolet partial engine ("short block") for a 1969 300/350 and there was absolutely nothing stamped on the engine stamp pad.

Here's an ugly looking CE stamp. Did they gang stamp the CE, year designation, and first three digits after casting, then add the last two digits at the time of the build-out?

              Peter -

Only the first few characters after the "CE" were in the gang holder - it's quite common to see the last two or three characters stamped individually.

I believe similar with service (OTC) Muncie transmissions. (see thumbnails, below) The "CT" [Chevrolet Transmission] was for complete transmission assemblies. A "CC" [Chevrolet Case (?)] was used for case assemblies (ie. empty case + fill/drain plugs). Muncie Indiana was a Chevrolet facility (see first thumbnail), so even if you had an Oldsmobile or Pontiac, and ordered an OTC trans from the corresponding dealer, the "C" prefix remained the first character with a Muncie 4-speed. I took the photo of the plant chimney at Muncie, after the plant was closed, and due for demolition in the following months.

The last two thumbnails show a service 1973 model year M22, stamped [CT3___41775___P2H27C] and my 1971 service M22 [CT1__P1D19C____43265]. Similar to the engines, there was a block of numbers assigned (like starting at 35000, or similar, and repeating each model year).

                  Wayne, (and anyone else interested)
Here is the 1972 model year verification of that, from a Chevrolet Dealer Service Information Bulletin dated September 29, 1971. If I recall correctly, those that I have for the other years are similar/identical. I just didn't dig them all out.
