So I have all the attaching hardware sand blasted primed and ready for paint. Need some advice on what tpye of paint etc.to use.Seeing how everything was black when I did the disassembly, I think I will stay with the black.(early nov. car) I do not have a spray both and I am hoping that I can get it done with spray cans ?? I heard that the Krylon brand is good. ?? Thanks in advance

Re: 63 chassis restoration paint type ?
for 63 and 64 chassis re-assembly, i'll sandblast, then a black self-etching primer. i then top it all with SEM semi-gloss black. i like SEM as it doesn't attract and hold lint, dust etc like others i've used. mikemike- Top

For chassis quality you don't really need a booth. Suggest shooting something other than a spray can for durability. Many recommend the POR chassis paint and say it can be brush applied successfully if you don't have a compressor or gun.- Top

Re: 63 chassis restoration paint type ?
what about powder coating before paint? Is it even more durable? Then paint with SEM? I was thinking of checking into powder coat first for my 64. Curious to know your thoughts, any impacts on judging.
thanks,

Re: 63 chassis restoration paint type ?
the last three frames i've done, a 62, a 64 and now a 65, have been powder coated. the powder coater has a semi-gloss black that i believe will pass NCRS scrutiny. when i've sand blasted , metal prepped, primered and then followed up with SEM semi=gloss black, i usually end up with about 400 bucks in materials to do a frame and all the associated suspension parts. the guy i found last year will sandblast ALL of the above , then powder coat the pieces for 600 bucks. its well worth the 200 buck difference for me to avoid the dust and sweat associated with my sandblasting the frame and pieces. the guy is in south central pa. if u need his contact info, email me. mike- Top

Re: 63 chassis restoration paint type ?
I've never had anything powder coated but I would not think that paint would stick to it. But I don't know. In any case, unless you plan to make a daily driver I don't see why you'd need any more durability than paint would provide.- Top

Re: 63 chassis restoration paint type ?
I suggest PPG DP90 epoxy primer then topcoat with correct shade black. I've had regular Dot 3 brake fluid leak on a 69 Camaro subframe and eat the topcoat black off but not put a wrinkle in the DP 90. Also I've primed some lawn decorations with DP 90 and they sit out in all weather and no rust after years of use.- Top

Re: 63 chassis restoration paint type ?
I am ready to start painting my frame and various cleaned up parts. Consulting the JM there are many descriptions for the black paint. A-arms are "gloss black" Radiator shroud is "gloss to semi-gloss", black out is "low sheen black".
I have the industrial Krylon for matching the black-out. But I need recommendations for the various blacks used as described int he JM. Will judging expect a different "gloss" on the radiator vs. the shroud and then again to the a-arms? As they were likely painted at different shops or suppliers there must be differences originally.
There are so many posts on this subject then hitting the JM my head is spinning. I just want to apply some paint already!
Is there a concise list anywhere that will get best results in judging? It seems like a simple table would save a lot of time.
Thanks,
