1970 with L-46 originally used cast aluminum valve covers. As I recall, "M" headmarked bolts were among those usually seen. M= Michigan Screw and Bolt which was a major supplier of fasteners to GM during the period. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Interesting valve cover screws
Joe,
I'm most curious about the dissimilar "M" markings. I very much believe these are the 4 originals on the L46 right aluminum valve cover on this car, Two with M, two with M within a circle. Is that part of the stamping process, different machines? Pretty sure the same manufacturer, as you have indicated.- Top

The "circling" of the headmark symbol is seen on other headmarks, too. I've always attributed it to just what you suggest-----a slight difference due to different tooling on different machines that spit these things out once-upon-a-time. There may have been some sort of internal significance to the manufacturer or it might just be due to the "artistic talents" of the different toolmakers who made the different tooling. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Interesting valve cover screws
I never thought I would see this topic! It brought back memories and a snicker. Way back when working at a plant in NW Ohio, Michigan Screw and Bolt was a supplier of fasteners to us. A box came in with fasteners as you pictured Mike. We had a new maintenance super. who swore the box with different head markings, some with the circle, some not, had different spec fasteners in the box. He immediately called Michigan and raised a big stink and was told the fasteners were the same except for the head markings. Our engineering got involved and since application for the screws was in one of my departments the head of engineering asked me to go with him and speak to the maint. super. We finally ran shear tests, stretch tests, etc. and proved the fasteners were of the same spec. The maint. super. was "required" to call Michigan and apologize. The maint. super. was famous for such actions and lasted a very short time. In addition to this he had some sticky substance on his fingers.Steve
