    "65 Convertible Windshield Post Weatherstrip Attachment & Sealant

    I'm finishing up some final items on my '65 restroation punch list and have a question about the windshield post weatherstripping attachement AND sealant (dum dum) placement. A big thanks to Bill Williamson for send me pictures of his '65 convertible windshield post weatherstripping configuration. The current '65 NCRS judging manual describes how Bill's car is assembled with the exception of the phillips screw installed in place of the plastic push-in rivet (see attached picture with screw circled). The picture I attached does not have the third screw installed of the plastic push-in rivet which I am preparing to install tonight.

    My questions are;

    1. Is the judging manual correct as it is currently written or is the assembly of Bill's car correct?

    2. Is there supposed to be any dum dum or weatherstrip glue under the weatherstripping that is attached to the body or anywhere else in this area?

    Thanks,

    James West

    James,
    Original cars that I observed have a light gray-ish sealant (almost like plumbers putty) under the stainless weather strip retainer that is screwed to the pillar. Where the weather strip meets the painted surface, there is usually a black sealant used (such as strip caulk). I brush contact cement in the channel to hold the weather strip in place. The extra pins and/or screws are a factory "fix" that varies from car to car. I have seen as many as three pins in that area. You should be able to see holes under your weather strip to determine, where and how many "fixes" were used on your car.
    Hope this helps.
    Marco

      Hi James . Under the windshield side mldg. you should have the grey sealer as Marco said . Between the windshield mldg. and the stainless weatherstrip retainer mldg. there should be black "dum dum . It works best if it warm when applied . The weatherstrip should be glued to the retainer . Do yourself a favor and glue the lower part of the weatherstrip at the joint area and allow to dry before stretching the upper part and gluing . If not it will pull apart . Dont ask me how I know . The 63 I finished last year had 3 screws on one side and 4 on the other . I agree adding the third or forth screw was a factory fix . I dont know how it will judge with the extra screws . Bill
