    1964 idler pulley 327 w/Sp.Hi.Perf bearing noise

With the idler pulley belt removed, should the idler pulley (bearing) make ANY noise at all if I manually spin it with my hand?

With the engine running and both the idler belt and alternator belt installed, I am getting a very faint noise (hard to describe/whirring) that I did not used to hear. I removed both the alternator/fan belt and the idler belt and now I am not hearing the noise. Therefore, I am wondering if the idler pulley bearing is going bad due to possibly over tightening the belt recently. The idler pulley assembly is "relatively new". It's been on the car for many years but I only have about 3,000 miles on a complete restoration. When I spin the idler pulley manually with my hand I am hearing what I think is the same noise that I recently began hearing with the engine running.

Any thoughts would greatly be appreciated?

    Thanks,

    Tim

I hope you didn't replace the whole assembly. The bearings are available separately.

can you still get the same New Departure Hyatt bearings that the original IP came with?

            Thanks,

Dr. Rebuild has them and I'm sure the most of the other major vendors do, too. About 35 bucks. These are not too difficult to install. An arbor or hydraulic press is required, though. Maybe 10 or 15 minutes work.

Not unless you can find an NOS GM #907176 or GM #908076. I don't think that New Departure-Hyatt has manufactured these bearings in years. These days most of this style bearing/shaft assemblies are made by FAG, Toyo, or SKF.
