    '67 back-up lamp

There are no numbers on the burned out back-up lamps on my '67. Owners manual calls for #1156,,,wrong answer. Who has the correct answer?? Thanks,

Owners manual for my 1968 has the #1156 listed for back-up lights.

The burned out bulbs that came out had had much smaller glass circumference. The 1156 won't even fit inside the lamp assembly. The bases are the same, but the 1156 is too big around. Michael, what do you have on your Marlboro Maroon??

An 1156 is what GM specifies for the 1967 back-up lamp application. Are you sure the replacement 1156 bulbs you have are not some sort of bogus, off-spec bulb? An 1156 should have a maximum outside diameter of 1-1/32".

OK, here's the deal. The former owner had put in a smaller diameter bulb. I initially tried the 1156 but the housing didn't seem to accept them. I was always told not to force something if it doesn't want to go. The 1156 were getting caught on the edges of the gasket. They are now in their little housings. I haven't seen a fit that tight since...well, you know when

According to the AMA specs at the GM Heritagecenter Archives site, the 1967 specifications on page "CHASSIS-6" (page 25 of the pdf) of this document.....

GM Heritage is committed to preserving the rich history of General Motors brands while providing a foundation for continued innovation into the future.

.....states it uses qty 2 #1156.

I think Joe nailed it.........the 1156 bulbs you're using may be asian replacements which have no regard for dimensional accuracy.

Leif, mine are 1156 sylvania bulbs that fit tight but they have been in there 20 years..bought car in 83 and replaced them all during body off and after paint in 94.

Almost all, if not all, of these miniature automotive lamps are now foreign-sourced regardless of what brand they are. Because of the normal tight fit of these bulbs, even if the current replacements were just slightly larger in OD than spec, they would exacerbate the fitment problem.

10-4...they're working and they're not "on" for any duration of time so maybe early failure due to heat won't be a problem...they won't rattle around that's for sure.
