Implications of this 1970 Service News note

See the left column (part way down) of the attached July 1970 img248.jpgService News scan. Does this mean that
any cars touched up at the dealership before that would not be a color match?

What does the second paragraph imply? Is that talking about partially-used cans of paint? Certainly dealers didn't pre-order paint and wait for a car of that color to come in and need paint work!

Mike, in 1967 there was the color 'Marlboro Maroon' (trim code 988) which they called 'Cordovan Maroon' (same trim code) in 1968. In 1969 trim code 988 was called 'Burgundy' and then in 1970 they called it 'Marlboro Maroon' again (trim code 77).

Just a guess here, but maybe what they're saying in a roundabout way is that the 1970 'Marlboro Maroon' is not the same as the 1967 'Marlboro Maroon' (they are different trim codes) and hence won't match.

Mike . It just means that Gm changed the color enough on the Corvette at the last minute and the paint companies (RM) already had a formula made that will not match the Corvette . The names that GM or the paint Co. use dont mean anything . All Dealers, body shops & painters go by the paint code numbers . If you stocked RM factory pack return it and wait for the next batch .

          Bill,
Could that mean that a dealer would have touched up a car, or done crash work, with a paint that didn't match?

IT wouldn't be the first time they did that nor the last.

My Dad ran a body shop for a Chevy dealer and it didn't happen a lot, but it did happen. If a customer wanted his car in a hurry sometimes he would say, "Just get it done." My Dad would always make sure the customer understood what he was getting into and would always note on the estimate that the customer had been advised he was not getting the exact color. I distinctly remember one time a guy with a silver Corvette and the painter telling him, "This is going to match about like a zebra." The customer didn't care, he just wanted it fixed and back asap.

Mike . It could happen . Most shops know what colors did or didn't match so they would be tinted or blended . Sometime Dupont would match better than RM or RM would match better than Ditzler . Believe it or not the Black those three companies made were not the same . Paint not matching is very common even now .
