1964 Corvette w/BU Lights - Need Turn signal Flasher HELP

1963-64 Corvette Turn Signal Flasher Gurus. HELP>>>>> The 1963-64 NCRS TIM&JG indicates that the "1964 with backup lights" could use the Tung Sol AP224 or the Signal-Stat 144. I can find the Signal-Stat 144 but can someone tell me what a Tung Sol AP224 looks like? BTW, the TIM&JG indicates it's blue painted aluminum & round. None of the Tung-Sol 224 blue metal flashers I have come across has the AP224 designation. Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks, Pete

    Pete,

I believe that the Tung-Sol 224 light blue metal flasher would be the correct flasher for the 64 Corvette w/back-up lights, GM # 383639, as per my 1964 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Oct. 1963). Wayne has used one dated "4 2 3" (1964, 23rd week) and I have a NOS one dated "6 1 0" (1966, 10th week) in a Tung-Sol box dated "6609" (1966, 9th week, I believe). There is photos of one by Wayne in a previous thread. Here are 3 photos of my NOS 224 flasher. Right now I have to go to work which is a somewhat rare thing to do.

BTW, I have studied flashers for 30 years and have never heard of a Tung-Sol "AP224" flasher. Also, there is a NOS GM 383639 flasher like mine currently on Ebay.

    Dave

I too have a 1964 with back up lights and have had difficulty determining what flasher goes in the car. Page 43 of the manual states either the round blue metal 224 Tung Sol or the rectangular 145 Signal Stat offered in various colors. So, are either correct? I don't want to get before Pete but need one as well. Once Pete secures one if there is another out there for sale I am interested. Note: The manual furthur explains that if the car is equipped with a radio a wax paper capacitor is attached to the flasher terminals. I have been able to locate one but it isn't clear to me how it is attached. Thanks, Michael Kalogridis (518) 248-1105

Dave - I had never heard of an "AP224" either until I saw it in the 63-64 TIM&JG. I am hoping for a response from a member with 64 interior experience who can clarify the TIM&JG listing. Pete

          Pete,

It's very possible that the only place the "AP224" flasher is listed is in the TIM&JG. Maybe it's a misprint.

The description of the 383639 flasher in my 1964 Chev. Parts Catalog is "FLASHER (2 bulb)(A-418B)". I have no idea the meaning of "A-418B".

The description of the 383639 flasher in my 1967 Corvair-Chevy II-Chevelle-Camaro Parts Catalog (Oct. 1966) is "(Stat. Co. No. 145, Tung Sol No. 323)" but this might be a misprint as my 1969 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (May 1969) lists GM # 383637 described as "FLASHER (3 bulb)(Stat. Co. No. 145, Tung Sol No. 323)".

The NOS 383639 Tung-Sol 224 light blue metal flasher currently on Ebay (in link below) is dated "0 2 9" (1970, 29th week).

Dave - I think that might be the case. In addition I would expect the '64 T-S 224 flasher to have a natural metal finish cover rather than a blue painted metal cover. Based on my experience the colored covered flashers started appearing in Production year 1965. What's your read? Pete

                  Dinno,
Is your 224 Tung-Sol flasher plastic or metal? I can not tell from the photo.
