    Need help on Axle Code for Chevrolet Product.

    Thought I would come to this board for a little help on the Axle Codes. Below is the
    stamp off of my 1977 P/U. (Bought New) I know all the info on the codes except
    the far right one which is a "F" which I presume is the Manufacturer of the Posi
    Unit. On other Chevrolet products the "E" stands for Eaton but cannot find what
    "F" means. The Pick Up forums have yet to help me. Anybody know?? Thanks-Larry77 Chevy Sport Pick Up 012.JPG77 Chevy Sport Pick Up 013.JPG

    Larry,

    It appears to me that your stamped code is "164W72 F".
    I have a 1973-1978 Chev./GMC Truck Parts Catalog (Dec. 1977) Ser. 10, 20, and 30.
    It lists the rear axle source codes as follows:
    C = Buffalo
    G = Gear & Axle
    K = GM of Canada
    W = Warren
    The code format is not the same as yours.
    I don't think that this helps but that's all I have.

    Could your code possibly read 164th day, Warren, 1977, 2nd shift???
    Does the suffix have 3 letter starting a the letter "K"?

    Dave

      Dave: Thanks for the response; I have all the codes for the trucks for those years except the posi unit makers.

      Dave:I know the KBD stands for 3:73 Locking Def.. The 164 is the Julian date of the axle. W is for the Warren Axle plant. 72 I presume is for
      1977 and the 2 is for second shift. The one I do not know is the far right which is "F". On Camaro's the "E" is for Eaton Posi. What is the
      "F" for?? Anybody?? Thanks Larry.

        My guess would be if you look at the base of the 2 it is missing. Just wonder when it was struck the bottom of the gang was tilted causing the bottom of the "2" missing and the "E" to become an "F".

          Paul: Thanks much for the response. Upon looking at the pictures again I think you may have a point. I guess this shows the variations of how some
          of the codes where applied. Thanks again.--Larry
