    1965 cruise control?

    Was cruise control a dealer installed option on a 1965 Corvette?

    Thanks,

      Thanks, Mike. Not as a factory option, which I know wasn't offered in 1965, but would a dealer install them?

        If you mean would a dealer have installed such a set-up when the car was new, I HIGHLY doubt it. That's because no such system (as a GM accessory item) was available at that time and, as a matter of fact, I don't think such a system was available at all at that time through the aftermarket.

        Such systems did become available later through the aftermarket and, I suppose, if some owner had wanted a dealer to install it, they would have done so.

          Scott, back in the 60s GM's Corvette was a track or straight line high performance car, most of the time everyone wanted the options like 370/411/456 limited slip gear ratio's, bigger engine displacements with more H/P, I am trying to recall when cruise entered the Corvette, maybe around 77 but cannot remember. Even in the after market cruise control packages did not enter the market until the later part of the 70's. It was tricky to install as the system were mechanical/ electrical and if the car was a 4 spd. some of the systems had to figure a way to disengage the system when the clutch was pushed in. Gm used a vacuum switch on the clutch pedal on the 4 spds.

            Cruise was a first time option on 77s - I had one. Automatic only. I believe the first application of cruise on a manual was 1984's model.

              Didn't the dealer cruise control begin in 67 on the A and B body cars

                Hello;
                In the sixties we, as Chevrolet mechanics, installed "Perfect Circle" cruise control(s) on our own and customer cars. They were the cruise of choice and I think standard equipment on Cadillacs.
                The unit mounted on the core support and sometimes on an engine bracket with a solid arm connected to the the carb linkage.
                I tried to upload pictures.
                The standard speedometer cable connected to the unit with an additional cable running to the speedo. head.
                Chevrolet full size cars had a cruise option in 1963, but it was a poor functioning unit and we didn't have enough faith in the product, so we installed the Perfect Circle units.
                Hope this helps.

                  I have a bolt on cruise control (I think the brand name is Speedostat) on my 65 and it works well. This is the third midyear I have had that I put one on. I went to great pains to hide the system. The control is stored under the dash and I get it out and attach to the turn signal when I use it. Don H.

                    In the 1965 Chevrolet full size cars introduced a cruise control with an under-the-dash control unit. Couldn't that unit be possibly installed on the same year Corvette by an individual as an add-on? See link below for eBay auction:

                      I can't remember the last time I used the cruise control on the LaCrosse or the GMC. Too dangerous of a gadget to use in my area. JD

                        Here in Texas we set 'em at 75 to 85 and blister down the highway and still get passed! How do you like your LaCrosse?
