Casting VS. part number on idler pulley?

A member has been nice enough to contact me with a NOS in box idler pulley assembly for my 1964 365hp 327. Mine is missing. The GM box is labeled 1#38299191 which matches the number in the assembly sheet manual which I believe is the part number. Am I correct? The idler pulley is stamped 3829192-GM the last digit being a 2 rather than 1 (different than the number on the box). Is one a casting number and the other a part number? Utlimately, is the pulley correct for the car? The judging manual doesn't list a number. It does describe the pulley and bracket as semi-gloss black in most applications. This one is zinc plated however, I can paint it if it is the correct part for the car in regard to function and judging. Thanks to anyone that can help. (518) 248-1105 Michael Kalogridis

    Michael,

My 1964 Chev. Parts Catalog (Oct. 1963) lists the 63-64 Corvette w/SHP, FI idler pulley assembly as part # 3829191 (not 38299191) in Gr. 1.062 and "consists of pulley and arm assy. w/bearing" as described in the footnote. GM # 3829191 is the part # for the complete assembly. The pulley itself is part # 3829192 and was apparently not sold over the counter as a separate part.

Thanks Dave, That tells me we are good with this part. Should I paint it or leave it as is? Judging manual says black in "most applications". Thanks again, I am sending the check to the guy that really helped me out here. This is a great group. mk

        Michael,

You will need advice for others about painting or not painting the idler pulley.

Yes, the pulley was never sold as a separate part. The only part of the idler pulley assembly that was ever available separately was the bearing/shaft assembly. If you needed anything more than that, you had to purchase the entire assembly.

my information is that the idler assembly installed by the factory had no part number on the pulley. The parts sold by GM over the counter did. If this is correct, it is possible that you could take a slight originality deduct in judging for the part no. on the pulley.
