1970 and 1972 Transmission Steel Tags

For a 1970 with an M22 transmission need the number and 2 letter Broadcast or Suffix code from the steel tag on the side cover.

Also need the same for a 1972 with and M21.

This is information for the next 1970-72 manual update.

Thank You to all in advance.

Paul -- as a C2 person, all I can offer is what I see in my 1970 P&A30B (Corvette only) Rev. 1-1-70. Usually the part # on the trans tag matches the description in Group 4.003 of the catalog.

For the M22, [ie. H.D. 4-spd. transmission] it shows "70 Corvette .... 3968012; (price) $348.60 (Muncie)". Strange, as that's about $100 cheaper than the M22's shown for 65 thru 69.

P.S. the photo of the tag you show, #3952659, shows as 70 Corvette (exc. close ratio) at same price as the M22.

I know nothing about the letter suffixes.

Thank you for your response. I to have a 1972 parts manual I am trying to confirm that the number agree. But I also need the 2 letter broadcast or suffix code that was also on the tag. We have seen many transmissions with the 2 letters in black stencil on the transmission so workers could easily pull the correct one. Have also noted a few with the remains of what could be a cardboard tag that also could have had the 2 letter code. The trans in the photo has been confirmed as a M20 close ratio 1970 3952659WB.

Here is what I have so far:

        1970 M20 3952659WB
        1970 M21 3968011WL
        1970 M22 3968012

        1971 M20 3981709WT
        1971 M21 3981710WY
        1971 M22 3271517WO

        1972 M20 6271516WD
        1972 M21 6271518WK
        1972 M22 6271517WJ

Well you are going to make me hunt up the real pictures from when I changed the clutch, but my memory tells me the WL on the top of my transmission was/is yellow.

That's what I am looking for all the variations over the years have seen many with black letters but none in other colors. The one I can see are only on the transmissions sides cant see whats on top when cars is assembled. The trench is getting deeper keep digging.

Should I start asking about the label 3 or 2 letter code on the differential? No will finish the trans first.

Don't you dare. As it is we will all be taking the dirt nap and some other young fool will be revising that manual. I told Dennis Clark it would never be done, but he didn't believe me.
