    1966 Starter Dilema

I just got a starter from a advertiser in Driveline and found out before I installed it the end cap on the solenoid is incorrect.
When I placed my order I explained to him the starter part number I needed as well as the solenoid has to read "Delco Made In USA Remy" on the forward face. SOOOOOOOO now I get a solenoid with a terminal connector missing. I took pictures of both starter end caps.
Is this a easy fix for me rather than sending the starter back and forth again? Why are they different.... mine with the extra terminal?

I've never seen one like this, at least not on a Corvette. It appears to be missing the "R" terminal. However, you don't need to return the whole starter to him. Just remove and return the solenoid and have him send you a correct piece.

Hi Bill The original solenoid are stamped with the part number 1114356 and in the face of the Bakelite between the terminals the following logo:
      Delco Remy
      Made
      In
      USA
The Solenoid without the extra bolts is for car made 1982 with electronic ignition.

        Bill,

Based on my research the solenoid on the 1964-1967 starters (327 eng.) should have a solenoid stamped 1114344. The Delco Remy plastic (actually Bakelite, I believe) cap should have a "R" terminal as well as a "S" terminal. Refer to UPC 12, sheet A9, in the 1966 Corvette AIM.

Changing the solenoid is quite easy.

BTW, the starter in the photo on the right appears to be originally from a 6 cylinder starter as I can see a 1/4" threaded hole on the starter housing which is used on 6 cylinder engines.

Years ago I studied a few ORIGINAL starters with ORIGINAL solenoids and this is what I found:

        327 starter "1107320", "6E31" (May 31, 1966), solenoid "1114344" w/"3" --- from 1966 Chev. 327 "T0527HAR" (May 27, 1966) --- Orange, MA --- I sold this starter to Pete L. in January 1990.

        283 starter "1107247", "6E20" (May 20, 1966), solenoid "1114344" w/"C" --- from 1966 Chev. 283 "T0526GF" (May 26, 1966) --- Templeton, MA

        283 starter " 1107247", "4A6" (Jan. 6, 1964), solenoid "1114344" w/"4" --- from 1964 Chevrolet convertible 283 "T0127D" (Jan. 27, 1964) --- Wilton, NH

        283 starter "1107247", "5H10" (August 10, 1965), solenoid "1114344" w/ "2" --- from 1966 Chev. --- Wilton, NH

I do NOT know the meaning of the digits "3", "C", "4", and "2" on my (or formerly my) 1114344 solenoids and there does not seem to be any correlation with the starter date codes.

The enclosed photo shows how the starter is mounted on a 1966 Chevrolet 6 cylinder engine. The 1/4" threaded hole in the starter case is where the starter brace (labeled #2) is attached.
