    Marlboro race track

My hobby shop where I keep my cars and Corvette stuff is not far from the old Marboro race track in Upper Marlboro Maryland. The track closed in about 1968 but I can see the delapidated grandstand and some pavement from the main road. It looks like there is some preparation toward clearing the land.

I believe I heard somewhere that the initial race of either the Bill Mitchel Singray or the Grand Sport took place there. It would have been the home track of Dr. Dick Thompson. If there is any truth to my notion that this track has a place in Corvette history, I will be tempted to ignore all the no trespassing signs and try to take some photos before the remnants are cleared out.

Can any of you Corvette historians let me know if this may be true?

I am so sorry I missed all this action going on just a few miles from where I lived. The guy who used to own my shop building even raced dirt track cars at Marlboro speedway in the early 50's before it was paved and enlarged into a road course. The first sports car race I attended was the 1969 Can-Am and the 6 Hours (with the great Owings Corning Corvette team) at Watkins Glen, the same year the little Marlboro track closed. Later, I crewed for a couple of B production Corvette teams, including Chuck Callas's team that won the North East Division SCCA championship and qualified on the pole for the 1977 National Runoffs in Atlanta.
