    '67 Battery location

curious minds want to know. I am seeing some SB cars with the battery mounted next to the overflow tank and others with the battery on the left side underneath the brake booster. Does it have to do with which SB or is it the difference between a A/C and a non-A/C car? Also, why would an engine have a double slotted pulley (for two belts) if the car isn't showing to have power steering or A/C or A.I.R.?thanks

Leif - '67 SBs w/C60 A/C had the battery on the left (driver's side) & the non-A/C SBs had the battery on the right (pass side). The hi-per SBs had pulley slots for a "captive" belt that went from the crankshaft pulley to the water pump pulley plus other slots for the belt for the alternator. The base motor SBs did not have the "captive" belt. Pete

Thanks, Pete. So to clarify, if a friend is looking at a supposed L79 and it has two pulley slots but only one belt, he needs to do some further investigation??Thanks, also, for clarifying the battery issue...makes sense what with the A/C evaporator on the right side.

Leif - If there are two slots on the water pump & crank pulleys & only one belt which would be the belt going to the alternator that also goes to the crank & water pump, I'd figure that that "captive" belt is probably just missing. Once that belt failed, many time is wasn't replaced because it was somewhat difficult to install. Hopefully, he will find it's just a case of someone not replacing that belt. Pete

            Pete and Leif------

....and that captive belt remains just as hard to install as ever.

RIGHT you are is there is NO adjuster on the crank or water pump. In the day we called it the Jesus belt. Water pump would still work to keep the engine cool & save it even if the alternator belt came off at high RPM.

Just a tid bit, but in 1971 I installed A/C on my 435 coupe while I was working as a mechanic at Chevrolet. The holes for the battery box are also on the left side frame and all that was needed were the riv nuts to be installed along with the box & fender well panel. The core support X that cossed the radiator could be left on and the holes for the hoses were also there.
