Re: Ti ign fires when key is released
John,
There should be a wire from the starter solenoid R terminal that runs to a single wire plug where the wire harness plugs into the distributor wires. This powers the ignition when cranking and when the key is released the power comes from the ignition switch. You are not getting power when cranking.
Test the solenoid R terminal when cranking at that distributor plug to see if it's got power. If not, the wire may be broke or the solenoid disc may be dirty/burnt not allowing power to the plug. If that's the case and the car has it's original solenoid that disc can be replaced so you can keep the original solenoid.- Top

Re: Ti ign fires when key is released
Tim thank you for your reply. I will do your reco. Just so I am clear the disk you refer to is in the solenoid on the starter. Secondly the plug you refer to is it the Ti harness where the wires go to the dist and coil. I appreciate your help.- Top

Re: Ti ign fires when key is released
John,
From my memory there should be a wire that comes out of the TI harness plug (the one that plugs to the distributor), it runs right out of the distributor plug and connects to the wire from the starter solenoid R terminal.
The disc I mentioned is inside the soleniod and most times can be turned over to a new surface. If that ends up being the problem, be careful to keep spacers etc in place because you don't want 12V going to ground when turning the key.
If you are not comfortable doing that job just replace the solenoid.- Top

Re: Ti ign fires when key is released
John
Sounds like you may have a bad pick up coil in the distributor. But you first need to do some proper troubleshooting. Here is a step block troubleshooting diagram that is also in your Shop Manual.
http://tispecialty.com/articles/66-71.pdf You can also go to http://www.tispecialty.com/ home page for more help. Follow it step by step and you should find your problem.
Also check all your grounds at the core support and starter. Make sure your battery fully charged.
Should also add is your amplifier an original or one of the new designed circuit boards. If I remember correctly the new boards need a higher voltage to work properly.- Top
